KUALA LUMPUR - "If you break the traffic rules, you will be issued with summons and no discounts will be given".

City police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said this in regards with the intensive enforcement operation codenamed "Hormat Undang-Undang Jalan Raya" conducted by the city police throughout the month.

He said the operation aimed at increasing awareness and compliance to the traffic laws, held at 16 key locations around the capital throughout the day including during peak hours.

"Road users will be issued summons for whatever offences they committed.

"As long as I am the Kuala Lumpur police chief, no discounts will be given.

"When we want to educate the public, we must be consistent and firm with what is being implemented, especially to increase awareness and culture of obeying traffic rules," he said in a press conference today.

He said this during the operation which started today until July 31.

Among the 16 key locations were the intersection of Jalan Tun Razak or Jalan Ampang, the intersection of Jalan Tun Razak or Jalan Semarak, the intersection of Jalan Ampang or Yap Kwan Seng, the intersection of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman or Jalan Tun Perak and the intersection of Jalan Sultan Ismail.

He explained that there were still many road users who did not obey the existing laws, especially involving traffic lights and stopping on the yellow lines.

He stressed that the community's negative culture on the road needed to be changed so that the public's safety can be improved.

When asked about enforcement during peak hours, Shuhaily said legal actions needed to be enforced at all times including during peak hours in the early morning.

This, he said was because trafiic offences were often committed during peak hours because road users were in a rush.

"It was understood that this is the first time this kind of operation was carried out during peak hours in the capital.

"For me, whether it's the peak hour or not, an offence is still an offence.

"We don't want to trouble road users but this is the sacrifice we have to make in order to uphold the law," he said.

In order to facilitate traffic during the operation, he said two traffic police teams were deployed namely the operation team and the traffic control team.

Meanwhile, he said operations to track down traffic offenders involving foreigners were also carried out in several identified locations.

"They are foreigners who come to our country so they need to obey and respect the existing laws," he said.
