BAYAN LEPAS - The Penang Fishermen's Association (Pen Mutiara) calls for all Penang state election candidates to prioritise the demands, rights and well-being of the 6,000 fishermen in the state.

Stopping reclamation projects, marine conservation and preservation and encouraging the growth of blue economy were among the demands highlighted by the fishermen.

Its chairman Ibrahim Che Ros said the Penang South Island (PSI) project will impact the livelihood of the fishermen.

"No matter which party wins the state polls, remember to care for our needs and welfare," he said in a press conference Sungai Batu, here, today.

The association further urged the Penang government to implement the 'Blue Economy' strategy where sustainable economic growth should be aligned with the ocean preservation.

"The marine eco-tourism sector should be encouraged. Eco-tourism operations such as homestay, flora and fauna, natural resources and fishing activities help to increase the economy for the fishermen community.

"It is also important for the state government to develop and implement a strategic plan that helps our coastal fishing community to adapt and be resilient to the effects of climate change.

"This includes providing necessary infrastructure and resources, training, and support to ensure their livelihoods are preserved," he said.

Therefore, the community urged the state election candidates to support and fight for their rights and demands.

"Pen Mutiara is committed in working with the candidates elected by the people in the Penang state polls to address the concerns and develop a fair and strategic plan for coastal fishermen which emphasises the goal of sustainable development.

"By taking immediate action, we can protect the rights and livelihoods of coastal fishermen and ensure the long-term sustainability of our coastal communities," he said.

Also present were Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, who is also the Bayan Lepas candidate and Pantai Jerejak candidate Ravinder Singh.

A total of 6,000 fishermen in Penang raised objections to the controversial PSI project undertaken by the Penang government and its developer, SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd.

This project is a new urban development off the coast of Penang Island that included homes, leisure, and work sites.

It is intended to be an Internet of Things (IOT)-enabled smart city to complement Georgetown.
