KUALA LUMPUR - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says that the country must send a clear message that those who rob the nation's wealth, steal public funds and escaped justice will not escape.

“The country has grown comfortable with this culture (corruption) for decades, allowing certain figures to amass the nation's wealth untouched.

These figures are shielded and supported by those in power. Consequently, the nation becomes impoverished and the people are left defenceless,” he said.

Anwar said that recently the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has taken action against a prominent figure, considered among the wealthiest.

“Surprisingly, there has been no voice from the opposition supporting this action. Some even defend it, claiming it is Anwar's vendetta.

“I pose a question to everyone: If today I embezzle RM10 billion for personal enrichment and use it for myself and my family, then retire, am I untouchable? If touched, will it be labelled as vengeance, with pleas to leave me alone because I am old?” Anwar questioned.

He also said that this mentality would spread and weaken the nation's spirit.

“We must send a clear message that if you plunder the nation's wealth, steal public funds, and escape justice today, we will catch you tomorrow, next month, next year, or even a decade from now!

“The MACC is leading the anti-corruption movement in the country, and I commend the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) for their initiatives.

“I have conveyed to Azam Baki (MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki) that this network should operate nationwide,” he added.

The Prime Minister also explained that any country proposing change, particularly in Malaysia’s Madani context, faces risks, especially those accustomed to a top-to-bottom culture of corruption.

“Corruption has become systemic and ingrained in our country's culture. Therefore, we should not underestimate this matter, as corruption is a formidable and deeply rooted enemy.

“'Integrity' and 'anti-corruption' are not mere slogans or political agendas; they are agendas to save the nation,” he said.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the inaugural National Anti-Corruption (NAC) Summit 2024, jointly organised by HRD Corp and the MACC aims to equip organisations with strategies to combat corruption.
