SHAH ALAM - Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the opposition is accusing the government of inaction, asserting that the people are enduring hardships.

"Who are these suffering individuals? They are none other than the high-ranking officials. The ones with Tun, Tan Sri and Datuk Seri titles who are engaged in embezzlement while the nation bears the brunt of their actions.

"It is time to put an end to the abuse of power and the plundering of our country's resources," he said during the PKR 25th convention held at the Ideal Convention Centre, here, today.

Anwar also said every member of the unity government was well aware of this reality.

"We all understand and agree that any government official found guilty of breaking the law or engaging in corruption will face expulsion and legal repercussions in accordance with the law.

"Combating corruption is a formidable task. When the government takes action against an individual of immense wealth, boasting tens of billions, the opposition's voices fall silent.

"They shrink from confronting this individual due to his wealth, leaving only a handful of us (government) as the courageous few willing to stand up against such a formidable corrupt adversary,” he said.

Anwar also questioned whether the previous Perikatan Nasional administration had adequately addressed this issue.

"How many instances of corruption, amounting to dozens of cases, were uncovered and brought to light, either through investigation or prosecution, involving abuses of power?

"When they held power, why did they not address this issue?," he said.

Anwar also said the current government has initiated efforts to combat corruption, but it was an uphill battle.

He said corruption was inherently challenging to root out, especially when dealing with individuals of substantial wealth and influence.

These corrupt figures, he said have extensive networks spanning across governmental and opposition lines.

"Hence, it is unsurprising that the opposition has been relatively quiet regarding the government's anti-corruption endeavours.

"In fact, some opposition members have even defended these wealthy individuals, citing their age and health as excuses. But should age or illness excuse criminal behaviour?

"Regardless of their health, age, or status, if you unlawfully syphon off the country's resources, there will be consequences. The law will be enforced without bias," he added.
