No regrets, no burdens: 73-year-old chooses solitude in old age
Omar Abdul Rahman said he preferred to be self-sufficient rather than depend on others or seek sympathy.

KUALA NERUS – Determined not to burden his family, a 73-year-old man has chosen to live out his remaining years alone in a modest hut in Kampung Mengabang Telipot.
Omar Abdul Rahman said he preferred to be self-sufficient rather than depend on others or seek sympathy. For him, solitude offers peace as he embraces old age on his own terms.
"I don't want sympathy from anyone, not even my children. I'd rather live out my remaining years alone in this house.
"I mostly stay indoors. At times, loneliness creeps in, but I choose to be on my own because I don’t want to trouble anyone or be seen as seeking sympathy.
"This way of life gives me a sense of peace and comfort," he told Sinar.
Once a well-respected writer, Omar was known by his stage name, Omara Rahman, and stood among the nation’s literary figures.
Throughout his career, he authored numerous short stories, poems, and novels published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and other local publishers.
He also wrote drama scripts for Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and frequently performed poetry on various stages.
Omar had been living alone since parting ways with his wife over a decade ago.
"I have eight children. They used to visit me here to check on me.
"Some even invited me to live with them, but I prefer to be on my own and not be a burden," he shared.
Now, after stepping away from writing, Omar admits he no longer has the strength to work as he once did.
"My days are mostly spent resting in this small hut. I cook just enough for myself.
"Sometimes, I read and focus on my prayers. I no longer write actively, but I’m always happy to share my knowledge with those eager to learn.
"For now, I find comfort in this solitude, even if it means spending my final years alone," he said.
