Experts call for stronger mosque security after child incident
An expert has suggested that mosque and surau management consider hiring security personnel to ensure the safety of congregants.

SHAH ALAM – Criminology experts are urging mosques and suraus to strengthen security measures following a shocking incident involving a child in a prayer hall.
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) criminology expert, Dr Zalmizy Hussin suggested that mosque and surau management consider hiring security personnel to ensure the safety of congregants.
However, he stated that the necessity of such measures depends on factors such as risk levels and the specific needs of each location.
"This step must be carefully planned to maintain the peaceful and serene atmosphere of worship.
"It is not just about assigning someone to guard the area but also ensuring they are trained to respond swiftly and effectively in emergencies, as potential threats cannot be ignored,” he said.
His statement follows a viral closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording showing a man sneaking into the women’s prayer section of a mosque and embracing a child from behind while other congregants were performing the Subuh prayer.
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan later confirmed that a 19-year-old man had been remanded for seven days to assist in investigations under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
Zalmizy also recommended that mosque and surau staff undergo training in handling emergency situations and threats to create a safer environment, particularly for children.
He stressed the importance of CCTV surveillance in these spaces to enhance security.
Meanwhile, Management and Science University (MSU) criminology expert, Nadiah Syariani Md Shariff pointed out that while current laws are sufficient to address paedophilia and sexual assault cases, criminals are constantly adapting their methods.
"Laws must be continuously strengthened to remain effective. A comprehensive prevention strategy requires the commitment of all levels of society, including parents, guardians, institutions, and the community," she said.
Experts agree that proactive measures, including security training and legal enhancements, are necessary to ensure the safety of worshippers, particularly vulnerable individuals such as children.
