ALOR SETAR - With several districts in Kedah experiencing extreme heat, the public is advised to take extra precautions while fasting to avoid dehydration and heat stroke.

Alor Setar Hospital’s Nephrology Consultant and Medical Specialist, Dr Syed Faisal Taha, highlighted the importance of staying hydrated, especially during long fasting hours.

"Practise drinking eight to nine glasses of plain water between iftar and suhoor. For example, two glasses at iftar, two glasses during ‘moreh’, two glasses before bed and another two glasses at suhoor," he advised.

However, he pointed out that this guideline does not apply to kidney patients, who should follow their doctor's recommendations on fluid intake.

Dr Syed also urged people to pay close attention to the health of vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, those with chronic illnesses and children.

"They must ensure these groups get enough rest, avoid excessive outdoor activities and regularly monitor their health.

“If family members show signs of extreme fatigue, dizziness or vomiting, immediately help them get some rest and if necessary, take them to a health centre for further examination," he said.

Additionally, he advised the public to limit outdoor activities unless necessary, as prolonged exposure to heat increases the risk of dehydration.

"However, we now see many people flocking to Ramadan bazaars even when the weather is still hot. It is better to go to the bazaar after the temperature cools down a little to prevent dehydration, which could lead to heat stroke," he added.
