KENINGAU - A 62-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his 10-year-old granddaughter in an incident that took place in a village, here.
The horrific act, which reportedly began when the victim was just five years old, was uncovered after the girl complained of pain in her genital area and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Keningau district police chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said on March 1, the victim’s aunt brought her to the hospital after she complained of discomfort.
"Initially, the victim complained of pain in her genital area and was taken to the hospital by her aunt for treatment.
"While receiving treatment, the victim informed the doctor that her genitals were sore.
"The victim then revealed that she had been repeatedly raped since the age of five and the incidents occurred at her home and at the suspect's house, with the first incident taking place in 2020 and the most recent on March 1," he said when contacted, today.
Yampil said the victim had been living temporarily with her grandfather while her parents were taking care of their youngest child, who was undergoing surgery at another hospital.
"The victim's house is located near the suspect's and during the incidents, she remained silent out of fear of being beaten and a lack of understanding about the wrongdoing of the suspect's actions," he added.
Following the victim’s statement, police launched an investigation and arrested the suspect the next day.
The case is being investigated under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which deals with the rape of a minor.
