SINGAPORE – A power bank exploded and caught fire inside a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train, filling the carriage with thick smoke and causing panic among passengers.

According to a CNA report, the incident occurred at 5.30pm on Friday at Raffles Place station.

The commuter, identified as Chen, suffered burns on her hand from the explosion.

In a social media post on Xiaohongshu, she described how the fire-blackened her hand and sent smoke billowing through the train.

“The MRT carriage was filled with smoke after the power bank spontaneously caught fire inside my bag. The incident shocked many passengers as thick smoke filled the carriage,” she wrote.

As soon as the train doors opened, passengers rushed out in panic while Chen threw her burning bag away before escaping.

MRT station staff responded immediately, evacuating passengers and making an emergency announcement about the incident.

Station authorities later retrieved the bag and power bank for further checks.
