KOTA KINABALU - The Kota Kinabalu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is facing a critical financial crisis that threatens the closure of its shelter, endangering the lives of a total of 351 animals.

This non-profit organisation for stray and abandoned animals in need of care is urgently appealing to the community for donations to ward off closure of its shelter and to sustain and continue its essential services for animals in need.

The shelter is currently housing and caring for 261 dogs and 90 cats, all of which faced an uncertain future if the facility eventually shut down.

According to the state's news portal Daily Express, the escalating operational costs, including the implementation of a new minimum wage, soaring veterinary expenses and a continuous and rising influx of rescue cases, have exacerbated the financial strain on the organisation.

In a recent statement, the organisation expressed grave concern saying: "If we are forced to shut down, the 261 dogs and 90 cats currently under our care will be left with nowhere to go. Right now, we need urgent help."

It also said it relied entirely on public support to continue its mission.

The potential closure of the Kota Kinabalu SPCA posed a significant risk to the welfare of these animals, highlighting the critical need for immediate financial assistance.

To help overcome the financial shortfall, the organisation is welcoming public contributions through bank deposits or online transfers, with donations going directly to its official bank accounts.

The organisation is also seeking in-kind donations to ease the financial burden of purchasing essential supplies during this critical time.

The Kota Kinabalu SPCA website provides a detailed list of needed in-kind donations, including pet food, cleaning supplies, disinfectants, animal cages, carriers, bedding and veterinary essentials like parasite control treatments.
