KUALA LUMPUR - Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar has emphasised the importance of filmmakers and drama producers incorporating Islamic values in their works.

His call came amid growing concerns over recent productions featuring excessive and inappropriate content.

Responding to concerns about local dramas incorporating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) themes and lavender marriages, Na’im said he has consistently provided guidance on the matter.

“The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has already issued clear guidelines on the values that should be upheld. Dramas play a crucial role in shaping the morals and mindset of society.

“Those involved in producing television dramas and films must recognise their responsibility in ensuring that their works align with Islamic values.

“If a drama contains clear LGBT elements, which directly contradict Islamic principles, it should not be featured—let alone aired during the holy month of Ramadan.

“That is why I urge our friends and colleagues in the film and drama industry to be mindful of their responsibility,” he told reporters at the World #QuranHour 2025 event, held at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Gombak, on Tuesday.

Drawing from Surah Al-Saff, Na’im highlighted that societal values are not only the responsibility of rulers (umara) but the entire community linking it to the Malaysia Madani concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim which focuses on moral values ethics and noble character.

He said the goal was to build a society with strong moral and Islamic principles, aligning with the Prime Minister's vision of economic success without compromising societal values.

He called on those in the entertainment industry to acknowledge their major role in shaping the mindset, moral and attitude of the people positively.
