Aidilfitri at sea: MMEA captain shares sacrifices of maritime duty
While Malaysians rejoice in celebrating Syawal, MMEA personnel are on duty to ensure our waters are free from threats such as smuggling, intrusion and maritime criminal activities.

SHAH ALAM – "Although the atmosphere of Aidilfitri at sea is not the same as on land, the spirit of camaraderie among the ship’s crew remains strong."
These were the words of Maritime Warrant Officer II Zali Kadi, who serves as the Captain of the Maritime Ship (KM) Nyalau, sharing his experience celebrating Aidilfitri at sea while carrying out his duties to enforce national maritime security.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officer said this was a unique experience and a sacrifice for the country.
"As the captain, I must set an example for my crew. There is certainly a sense of longing for family, but the duty to safeguard our nation’s waters takes precedence.
"Onboard the ship, we are not just colleagues but have become like a family. We support one another and ensure everyone is doing well, especially on special occasions like Aidilfitri," he said recently.
Zali said that this was his second year celebrating Aidilfitri at sea since his appointment as captain in January 2024.
He explained that during the Special Operation Sea Gate No. 1/2025 for Aidilfitri, his role went beyond leading to ensuring the discipline, safety and well-being of the crew.

"While Malaysians rejoice in celebrating Syawal, MMEA personnel are on duty to ensure our waters are free from threats such as smuggling, intrusion and maritime criminal activities.
"The Special Operation Sea Gate focuses on monitoring critical maritime borders to ensure the nation’s security is always maintained," he said.
Reflecting on his experience fasting at sea, Zali shared that the scorching heat, packed work schedule and unpredictable sea conditions were major challenges for every team member.
"Serving in the middle of the ocean during Ramadan is not an easy task. However, our spirit remains unwavering.
"Breaking fast at sea with simple meals, far from family, has become our routine. But we see this as a unique experience, a sacrifice for the nation," he explained.
Zali also shared that his family understood and appreciated the responsibilities he bears.
"My wife is also a member of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), so she understands this sacrifice better.
"Family support is crucial for us to continue serving with dedication," he added.
He emphasised that the sacrifices made by the maritime personnel are not merely duties but a trust carried out with sincerity.
"We may not wear traditional 'Baju Melayu' on the morning of Aidilfitri, but the burning patriotism in our hearts is the most valuable Aidilfitri gift for the nation.
"For young individuals aspiring to join the security forces, this experience is proof that being part of MMEA is a great honor for the country," he concluded.
