MH17: Malaysia entitled to seek MH17 compensation from Russia
This compensation claim is not only about upholding justice but also sends a clear message that civil aviation safety must never be compromised and should be protected at the international level.

SHAH ALAM – Malaysia could consider pursuing various forms of compensation that encompass national interests from Russia following the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.
National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) senior lecturer Dr Azrul Azlan Abdul Rahman said the recommendation by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for Russia to begin compensation negotiations with the countries involved presents a significant opportunity for Malaysia to act more firmly in the name of justice for the victims and their families.
“The forms of compensation that could be considered include financial payments to the families of the Malaysian victims who died, covering claims for loss of life, emotional suffering and the economic losses they endured.
“The Malaysian government is also entitled to demand reimbursement for all costs incurred in efforts to investigate the MH17 tragedy and related legal processes over the past decade,” he told Sinar.
Azrul also emphasised that Malaysia could seek official assurances and commitments from Russia to prevent such incidents from recurring, including cooperation in further investigations and adherence to international aviation laws outlined in the Chicago Convention.
“This compensation claim is not only about upholding justice but also sends a clear message that civil aviation safety must never be compromised and should be protected at the international level,” he said.
