SHAH ALAM – A tragic incident in Tangkak, Johor has shocked the nation, after a 33-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife and attempted to set his mother-in-law's house on fire.

The incident took place around 4.15pm on June 2, when the suspect is believed to have slit his wife’s throat at their home in Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambir.

He then reportedly covered her body with a blanket and left it in the house.

Following the alleged killing, the man drove about 40 kilometres to his mother-in-law’s residence in Lenga, Pagoh.

There, he attempted to set the house ablaze, but only managed to burn several vehicles parked outside.

Police arrested the suspect at his home in Bukit Gambir at around 7am the following day, June 3.

He was brought before the Tangkak Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, June 4, where he was remanded for seven days to assist with investigations.

During court proceedings, the suspect reportedly chanted religious phrases such as “Allahuakbar” and “Astaghfirullah” loudly and repeatedly.

He appeared to be in physical and emotional distress, groaning and showing signs of pain.

Despite that, he was seen smiling as he was escorted into a police truck after the proceedings, en route to the Tangkak District Police headquarters for temporary detention.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 435 for mischief by fire.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect tested negative for drugs.
