SHAH ALAM – Bersatu Armada chief Muhammad Hilman Idham spoke of the need for strategic political cooperation and a clear commitment to principles as the party prepares for the upcoming Sabah state election.

While acknowledging that groundwork is already being laid, Hilman confirmed that internal discussions are ongoing about whether Bersatu should formalise political alliances before or after the election.

What is certain, he said, is that no single party can afford to contest alone in today’s fragmented political environment, especially in a complex state like Sabah.

“With the current political landscape, we know that we can’t win alone. We can’t form a government on our own. We have to work with other coalitions, especially the local parties in Sabah. But at the same time, we must draw a clear line to show that we remain firm in our ideals and principles,” he said when met at the Karangkraf Complex today.

He stated that the national political landscape has shifted significantly, moving beyond the traditional two-coalition model.

In Sabah, where political allegiances are often fluid and local parties play a dominant role, this reality is even more pronounced.

As such, Bersatu is open to collaboration but insists that any alliance must be rooted in shared values and accountability.

“I believe one of the key issues being raised in the Sabah state election is the plundering of assets and natural resources in the state,” he said.

He pointed out that despite the state's rich natural endowments, Sabah remains underdeveloped and its people are frustrated with decades of corruption and unfulfilled promises.

In forming any coalition, he said Bersatu must ensure its partners are equally committed to addressing corruption, safeguarding state assets and improving the quality of life for the people.

He said the public in Sabah expects clear policy direction and a firm stance on governance, not just political manoeuvring.

“I think with the current situation, especially following the Turun Anwar rally, there is clearly a positive shift in public mood.

"Right now, Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional should focus on the real issues affecting the people, as many are seeking an alternative that can genuinely address their concerns,” he said.

He also stated that while political collaboration is necessary, it must not come at the expense of core principles and the people’s trust.

The challenge now is to shape an alliance that not only wins elections but also delivers meaningful change, particularly in a state as resource-rich yet overlooked as Sabah.
