SHAH ALAM - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied having any connection with late American financier Jeffrey Epstein or any party linked to the case, following the release of documents by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).

In a post on X on Saturday, Anwar said he had only become aware that an external party had sought to meet him after his name was cited in an email exchange related to the Epstein case.

“Praise be to Allah, for the past dozen years as stated in the email, I have had absolutely no connection with any of the parties exchanging those emails, especially Epstein,” he said.

Anwar, who was in Johor Bahru at the time, added: “Alright, I’m going to continue sightseeing in Johor Bahru,” and included the hashtag #DoneExplain, indicating he had addressed the matter.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came after Armada Bersatu, the youth wing of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), called on him to clarify allegations that he had interacted, directly or indirectly, with Epstein or individuals named in documents disclosed by the DOJ under what has been referred to as the “Epstein Files”.

The documents and correspondence were released as part of transparency efforts in investigations related to Epstein.

The trove reportedly includes more than three million pages of emails, records and related materials released on Jan 30.

One of the emails, dated 2012 and attributed to Epstein, suggested arranging a meeting between Anwar and former senior US banker James Edward “Jes” Staley, a close Epstein associate.

In the email, Epstein claimed to have “always stayed close” to the PKR president, a claim Anwar denied.

There are no emails from Anwar in the released documents.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 and charged with trafficking underage girls for sex. He was found dead in his prison cell two months later at the age of 66.

The Epstein case has implicated or mentioned numerous high-profile figures globally, including former US presidents, British royalty and senior financial and political figures, though not all named individuals have been accused of wrongdoing.
