Pas' Dr Samsuri is new Perikatan Nasional chairman
The appointment was confirmed by Gerakan President Datuk Dr Dominic Lau.

KUALA LUMPUR – Pas Vice-President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has been appointed as the new Chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN), effective Sunday.
PN Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the appointment of the Terengganu Menteri Besar was made to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who resigned in January.
He added that the position of Deputy Chairman will be held by Muhyiddin, who is also President of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
“It is noted that the meeting approved Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s resignation as PN chairman with effect from Jan 1, 2026.
“The meeting subsequently, and unanimously, appointed Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as the new PN chairman with immediate effect,” he said.
Takiyuddin made the remarks at a press conference following the PN extraordinary Supreme Council meeting at the Pas headquarters here today.
Muhyiddin had earlier announced his resignation as PN chairman following political turmoil affecting Pas and Bersatu in Perlis.
When asked about the rationale behind Dr Samsuri’s appointment, Takiyuddin, who is also Pas Secretary-General, said it was based on several considerations.
He added that PN’s constitution does not require the chairman of the coalition to be a party president.
“Firstly, under PN’s constitution, it is not specified who can be appointed as chairman. This means anyone from PN can be chosen by the PN Supreme Council to be chairman. There is no requirement for the person to be a party president or deputy president,” he said.
