SHAH ALAM – The latest developments surrounding calls for action to be taken against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki over his shareholdings highlight mounting political pressure.

The matter has moved beyond procedural debate, touching on institutional integrity and public confidence.

In the Dewan Rakyat, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong (PH) urged firm action, including suggestions for resignation and the establishment of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI).

His strong statement indicated that the issue could become a political liability if not addressed promptly.

Significantly, the RCI proposal was also supported by Pendang MP Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim (PN).

The cross-party backing demonstrates that integrity concerns can transcend political lines and become a shared demand.

However, the motion to debate the matter was rejected by Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul on grounds that a special committee had already been set up to investigate the issue.

This reflects Parliament’s procedural approach in handling the ongoing controversy.

At the same time, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar confirmed that Azam had been summoned to give a statement on Feb 19.

Administrative processes are ongoing, but public confidence remains a major challenge.

From a political perspective, failing to handle the matter convincingly could affect voter perceptions ahead of the next general election.

In an environment of increasingly critical public mandate, integrity issues can easily become decisive factors.

The position of the MACC chief commissioner demands a high level of public trust.

A prolonged controversy without a thorough resolution risks undermining the credibility of the institution as a whole.

Ultimately, the matter serves as a test of the government’s commitment to transparency and institutional reform.

The decisions taken will reflect the priority between upholding existing processes and restoring public perception comprehensively.
