SHAH ALAM - The potential return of Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to Umno is seen as a move that could strengthen the party and reinforce Barisan Nasional (BN) ahead of upcoming elections.

Senior lecturer in political science at Universiti Malaya Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub said the re-entry of both leaders could inject fresh momentum into the party due to their influence among young voters, fence-sitters and those outside the party.

“The return of the former Umno Youth chief also gives the party an advantage in facing the upcoming elections, including the Melaka and Johor state elections as well as the general election,” he said.

He added that the development could also benefit Umno politically, particularly as rival parties such as Bersatu and Pas were facing internal challenges within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

Tawfik said Khairy also commands a loyal support base that could follow his move should he return to the party.

He said the former youth and sports minister would be well suited to play a role in Umno’s communication strategy due to his strong influence and his ability to connect with younger voters.

“I also see Shahril Hamdan taking a similar step but gradually, by observing what will happen to Khairy when he re-enters Umno. Perhaps he will be given a position or various other roles within the party.

“Umno will be seen as more open, not rejecting young leaders and most importantly leaders who were expelled are not regarded as enemies but as an important opportunity for the party to be restored,” he said.

Tawfik also suggested that Khairy should be considered again as an election candidate and potentially return to the Cabinet, describing him as a key asset for Umno.

“KJ has a youthful spirit, did not join any other party even after being expelled and most importantly he is vocal and does not hide his stance. Umno must accept that such a character should return to attract support from young voters,” he said.

Meanwhile, MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said the return of Khairy and Hishammuddin would strengthen BN as a coalition.

“They have extensive experience at various levels of administration and are political figures who are respected and accepted by all races.

“With moderate leaders like them, the people will see BN moving towards unity and cohesion,” he said.
