SHAH ALAM – A search and rescue operation is underway for a nine-year-old girl who is feared drowned after falling into a drain near a condominium in Bandar Mahkota Cheras on Friday.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) received an emergency call regarding the incident at 7.08pm.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Operations Assistant Director Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said seven personnel from the Kajang Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene, arriving at 7.22pm.

“According to the operations commander, the victim is suspected to have fallen into a three-by-three-metre drain while attempting to retrieve a ball.

“At the time of the incident, the water current in the drain was swift and it is believed the victim was swept away,” he said in a statement.

Mukhlis added that the Selangor Water Rescue Unit (PPDA) has been mobilised to the location to assist with search efforts.

This incident follows a similar tragedy just days ago in Bandar Puncak Alam.

On April 28, a 10-year-old boy, Khairil Izani Khaizalullinudin, was reported missing after falling into a drainage channel at Lorong Cakera Purnama during heavy rain.

The search for Khairil Izani ended on April 30 when his body was discovered by rescue teams near a riverbank in Sungai Buloh, several kilometres from where he was first swept away.

In response to the Puncak Alam case, the state government has committed to enhancing safety measures at the site to prevent future accidents.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said immediate steps would include the installation of safety fences and drain covers or barriers at the location.

"The state government will improve safety aspects at the location where the boy fell and was swept away by strong currents by installing safety fences and drain covers.

"These immediate steps are vital to ensure such incidents do not recur in the area," he said.
