BANGI - A man was sentenced to three months' imprisonment and fined RM5,000 by the Bandar Baru Bangi Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to an offensive post that insulted the King, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim.

Judge Firdaus Md Isa handed down the sentence against Mohd Hafiz Haron, 42, ordering him to serve the jail term from today. Additionally, the court ordered that he serve four months' imprisonment if he fails to pay the RM5,000 fine.

The man was charged with knowingly making and transmitting grossly offensive comments with the intent to annoy any person via TikTok through the account @muhammad.bin.abdu969 at 7.30 am on Sept 11, 2025.

The post was viewed by a complainant at a house in Taman Pelangi Semenyih 2 here, at 10 pm on the same day.

The charge was brought under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000 or a maximum imprisonment term of two years, or both, and a further fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence persists after conviction.

According to the facts of the case, a complainant who felt angry and upset upon seeing the post lodged a police report, and subsequently, three other individuals also filed reports on the same matter.

The evidence showed that the offender was fully aware that the post from his mobile phone was grossly offensive and insulting to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nurul Atiqah Mohamad Alias sought a commensurate sentence as a lesson to the offender.

Mohd Hafiz, who was unrepresented, appealed for a light sentence on the grounds that he works in his village to support his ailing mother and three children.

On Sept 13, 2025, police arrested him to assist in an investigation into the viral spread of a video on TikTok containing seditious elements and insulting the King.

Checks revealed that the man had three prior criminal records and one case related to narcotics. - BERNAMA
