MADRID - Real Madrid confirmed José Mourinho as its new first-team coach on Thursday, with the Portuguese returning 13 years after his previous spell at the club, reported Xinhua.

The 63-year-old leaves Benfica with Real Madrid paying the Portuguese club a €15 million compensation fee (US$17.3 million) and has signed a three-year contract until the end of June 2029.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez had said Mourinho would become Real Madrid’s coach if he won last Sunday’s election for the club presidency against businessman Enrique Riquelme, which he did with 65 per cent of the vote.

Mourinho's first spell in charge between 2010 and 2013 saw him lead the club to one La Liga title along with the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercup.

During his election campaign, Perez also promised that the club would sign French international defender Ibrahima Konate, who leaves Liverpool on a free transfer, Inter Milan's Dutch international Denzel Dumfries as well as a €150 million signing, which saw Atletico Madrid reject a bid of that amount for striker Julian Alvarez on Tuesday.

Mourinho will start working with the Real Madrid squad on Saturday. - BERNAMA
