DAP to decide stand on Najib's house arrest at Saturday CEC meeting

Loke said the 1MDB scandal remained the largest corruption scandal in the country's history, one that had linked Malaysia's name to kleptocracy in the eyes of the world, tarnished the nation's image and eroded public and investor confidence in its institutions.

SHAH ALAM – DAP will convene a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting on Saturday to determine the party's official position and possible follow-up action following the conditional pardon granted to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Secretary-General Anthony Loke said the discussion comes against the backdrop of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, which he described as the largest corruption scandal in Malaysia's history and one that had damaged the country's reputation internationally.

"The 1MDB scandal linked Malaysia's name to kleptocracy in the eyes of the world, tarnished the nation's image and eroded public and investor confidence in our institutions," he said in a statement on Friday.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said Najib's conviction over the scandal was a matter already decided by the courts and that its impact on the country could not be forgotten. FILE PIX

Loke said Najib's conviction over the scandal was a matter already decided by the courts and that its impact on the country could not be forgotten.

"The financial burden arising from the 1MDB scandal is still being borne by the country and its people today," he said.

Citing a Finance Ministry statement dated Sept 13, 2026, he said the government's total 1MDB-related obligations stood at RM51.4 billion, comprising RM42.5 billion already paid and a remaining debt of RM8.9 billion.

Loke said DAP had consistently demanded justice and accountability over the scandal and had pushed for thorough investigations and an independent legal process.

"We have fought for the wrongdoing to be investigated thoroughly and for those responsible to go through a fair and independent legal process," he said.

He added that public anger over the 1MDB scandal was among the key factors behind the change of government in the 14th General Election in 2018 and that the mandate to combat corruption and abuse of power remained a core principle of the party.

Loke also defended Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh, saying she had conveyed views consistent with DAP's principles while carrying out her responsibilities as a member of the Pardons Board.

"Hannah Yeoh carried out her duty honestly and candidly in the interest of the country," he said.

At the same time, Loke stressed that DAP respected the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's constitutional power of pardon and remained committed to the principles of constitutional monarchy, the supremacy of the Constitution, the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

The CEC meeting on Saturday is expected to determine the party's formal stand and any subsequent course of action following Najib's conditional pardon, which allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
