Singapore on Wednesday hanged a prisoner convicted of conspiracy to smuggle one kilogramme of cannabis, authorities said, ignoring international calls for the city-state to abolish capital punishment.

The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar today, weighed by a stronger greenback on renewed interest for safe haven currencies, an analyst said.

"If Najib is let off very early into his sentence, it would appear the unity government is not serious on "catching the big fish" but may be seen as keen in power," IIUM political analyst Dr Syaza Shukri.
