A politician of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was shot and killed in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday night, a senior police official said on Thursday.

Several photographs showing an individual believed to be a man who was shot dead circulated on social media.

A loud banging sound initially thought to be a motorcycle exhaust turned out to be gunfire in an incident that claimed the life of a man at a fast-food restaurant here on Sunday.

The incident is believed to have occurred at about 10pm while the victim was eating at the premises.
