PUTRAJAYA - Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has nabbed bitcoin syndicates offering Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) technicians between RM3,000 to RM30,000 to keep silent over their mining operations.

MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said the bribes were paid in cash or in monthly "crypto" currency.

He further said under "Ops Power" raid, the syndicates tapped power lines directly or channelled electricity from other consumers to keep their bills low.

"The syndicates used mining machines brought from overseas through Port Klang and were declared as IT gadgets," Azam said during a press conference, today. Also present were TNB CEO Datuk Baharin Din and Energy Commission CEO Abdul Razib Dawood.

TNB’s losses since 2018 from bitcoin miners amounted to near RM2.3 billion from 7,209 reported cases.
