SHAH ALAM - MCA youth have expressed concern over a viral video allegedly showing a professor at a public university abusing and shaming a student during an online class.

MCA National Youth Chairperson Datuk Nicole Wong Siaw Ting has urged the university to take immediate action against the lecturer to prevent similar cases in the future.

"MCA youth is deeply concerned about the viral video. While it is true that the student has completed his studies, it is equally unfortunate that such an incident occurred in the first place," she said in a statement.

"It reflects poorly on the noble profession of teaching and the associated public university," she said in a statement.

A 1.45-second video that has gone viral allegedly shows a recorded online class, where the lecturer is allegedly heard humiliating a student for not owning a computer despite being in his fifth semester.

The lecturer had allegedly asked about the student's background and after explaining that his father was jobless and his mother had died, the lecturer had asked if his sister could sell her gold bracelet to buy a laptop.

The lecturer was heard saying: "The laptop only cost RM800, so what's your problem with that?' This is why I cannot sit with B40 because they prioritise everything else other than studies," she was heard saying.

However, Nicole said that education comes first and the lecturer's act is a major violation of the instructor's code of trust that educators are expected to have.

"Students who are bullied are more prone to develop mental health problems and stress in the long run, which can have a negative impact on their lives," she said.
