MELAKA - The process of acquiring 28.28 hectares of land to develop the waste-to-energy (WTE) plant or incinerator at the Sungai Udang Sanitary Landfill here is currently in the final stage.

State Housing, Local Government and Environment Exco Datuk Zaidi Attan said the incinerator's construction needs to be expedited as the landfill is expected to reach its maximum capacity by April 2024.

He said the construction is expected to be completed in 2026, and Melaka is the first state in Malaysia to use the latest and green technology in solid waste management.

"On Monday, I will hold a meeting with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to ensure that the payment process to land owners can be expedited,” he told reporters after officiating at the Fabric Waste Recycling Day 2022 here today.

Zaidi said that 346,750 tonnes of garbage were sent to the Sungai Udang landfill last year, with a disposal cost of RM12.6 million.
