GE15: Selangor won't have state polls, Sultan wants state government to finish its term

SHAH ALAM -- The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, does not want the state legislative assembly to be dissolved just so that state elections can be held in tandem with the coming 15th General Election (GE15)

Instead of such dissolution -- said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari who had an audience with the ruler earlier today -- the Sultan wants the Pakatan Harapan-led state government to complete its full term.

This effectively meant that the Selangor state elections will only be held next year.

"Sultan Sharafuddin wanted the current administration to focus on safeguarding the welfare of the people, rather than dissolving the state assembly to follow the dissolution of parliament," read Amirudin's statement.

Amirudin also said he had briefed Sultan Sharafuddin on the state government’s preparations for possible floods as well as the Selangor state budget for 2023.

He said the annual state budget will be tabled at the legislative assembly this year.

Yesterday, caretaker prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the dissolution of Parliament, paving the way for GE15.

Since last week, all non-Barisan Nasional-governed states have announced their decision to not dissolve their respective state assemblies to do state-level elections simultaneously with GE15.

The non-participating states are: Kedah, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
