SHAH ALAM - Incumbent Putrajaya MP Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor or well-known as Ku Nan claims that his court case was unfair and politically motivated.

He said his sentence of RM2 million fine and 12 months jail turned out to be wrong and upsetting.

“In my case, they sentenced me to a fine of RM2,000 and 12 months jail. What amazes me was that his (judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan’s) judgement turned out to be wrong.

“How can he become a judge in the first place?

“I was upset with his judgement. How can a judge say that if his judgement is wrong, then you can just go and appeal? This is what the court was about and to me, it was not fair,” he told Sinar Daily's Politically Frank.

He further said that his court case was politically motivated since he had already made it clear that the payment of RM2 million was made for a political fund, in which the donors have the receipts and he had submitted to the court, only for them to decide otherwise.

He insisted that the motivation behind his case was due to his position in Umno and because of his refusal to jump party.

“It was politically motivated because I am the secretary-general of the party and I was asked to jump but I refused,” he said.

When asked if the court cases will have an impact on voters' decision during the 15th General Election (GE15), he said Putrajaya voters would support him due to his past record to serves the people.

“See how people come to see me and say they will give their vote, this is because they know that I work. People can say anything about Tengku Adnan, but Tengku Adnan serves the people.

“Because to me, I am a businessman but unlike other businessmen and the rich who keep the money they made for themselves, I am the only rich man and businessman who, with whatever I give back to society,” he added.

On December 21, 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court found Tengku Adnan guilty of accepting funds from Aset Kayamas director Chai Kin Kong, despite being aware that the businessman's was involved in business with the Federal Territories ministry, which was then headed by Ku Nan Ping.

He received a 12-month prison term and an RM2 million fine.

However, he was acquitted of the charge by the Court of Appeal on July 16, 2021.

In a 2-1 majority decision in allowing the then Putrajaya MP’s appeal against his conviction and sentence, prosecution witnesses supported the defence contention that the money was a political donation, as reported by FMT.

“The defence has created doubt in the prosecution’s case. There is an appealable error that warranted appellate intervention. The conviction is therefore unsafe,” said bench chairman Suraya Othman.

Ahmad Nasfy Yasin concurred with Suraya while Abu Bakar Jais was the dissenting judge.
