JOHOR BAHRU - Rapid Rail's technical team and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Thales Group are monitoring the operation of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system service on the Kelana Jaya line which was reopened today.

Caretaker Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said so far the LRT system services had ran smoothly without any interruption.

"Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) will also continue to update on the LRT service from time to time.

"This morning, I received a report from the Prasarana Group chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah about the latest developments, the report revealed that all trends and systems are perfect and there have been no problems so far.

"However, I have instructed Prasarana, the technical team of Rapid Rail as well as the OEM, that we have to ensure that during this operation period, the LRT service is stable," he told reporters during his visit at the Johor Bahru Ancient Temple, here on Monday.

Also present was Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Last Tuesday, Rapid Rail stopped the route service was disrupted and had to be stopped due to the automatic train control system (ATC) which caused a loss of signal between the control centre and the train.

The following day, some parts of the Kelana Jaya LRT system services were suspended for seven days, which involved 16 stations from Kelana Jaya Station to Ampang Park Station.

Wee said if anything happened including not being confident with the existing system, it is necessary to intervene as soon as possible to protect users and the improvement process will be done immediately.

He said that the LRT service, which was fully operational from 6am Monday, which is two days earlier than expected, was expected to continue operating as usual.

"The re-operation of the LRT is awaited, after testing for four consecutive days and conducting meetings to ensure that safety aspects are observed and prioritised.

"I also asked the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to send their team to verify security because it is a matter that needs to be emphasised," he said.

Meanwhile, he said, airlines in this country were asked to increase their flight frequencies, especially at midnight during the festive season.

"I have previously requested the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), so that we can increase the frequency of flights for passengers thus reducing the burden on the people, especially during the festive season.

"If possible, use a midnight flight because it is not busy without affecting the quality and the maintenance work, therefore they can be allowed to fly, so at least during the Chinese New Year and beyond Hari Raya Aidilfitri runs successfully," he said.
