Australia, Malaysia forging relations in new sectors

KUALA LUMPUR - Australia is committed in forging new cooperation in sectors such as digital, data storage and analytics, health, financial services, renewables, hydrogen and energy transition says Australia’s High Commissioner to Malaysia Dr Justin Lee.

To further strengthen its relations with Malaysia, a number of highlights have been planned for 2023 including providing further scholarships for Malaysian students through Australia's ASEAN wide programmes.

Both sides will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Penang and Adelaide later in the year and the 50th anniversary of the Australian Federal Police office in Malaysia, its oldest international presence.

"Going forward, we are committed to taking the Malaysia-Australia relationship to new heights. There will a number of highlights in 2023,” he said during at the Australia Day 2023 celebration here, recently.

He said Australia will also launch a new Southeast Asia Economic Strategy this year, which is prepared in consultation with Malaysia and other regional partners.

Lee noted that economic ties between both countries have also reaching new heights. "We have a complementary economic relationship which benefits both our countries. In just the last year we have seen more Australian brands setting up their regional headquarters here in Malaysia and expanding their manufacturing.

"And we are seeing Malaysian companies invest and win contracts in Australia,” he said/In August last year, multinational food manufacturer Arnott The Arnott’s Group (TAG) set up their regional headquarters here while Cochear Ltd, a global leader in implantable hearing solutions, has also expanded their advanced manufacturing facility in Kuala Lumpur.

Also last year, Malaysia’s Gamuda Bhd and Australia-based John Holland Pty Ltd. had secured a RM3.03 billion highway contract in Australia through their joint venture company, John Holland Gamuda Joint Venture (JHGJV) - BERNAMA
