SHAH ALAM - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim explained that there is no conflict of interest for the unity government, with regards to the appeal for a full pardon for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

According to Anwar the matter of conflict should not arise as anyone is allowed to appeal for a full pardon.

"The appeal can be made but of course we will obey the rules and conditions set. Although I am in the process but ultimately the issue of awarding medals and pardons is under the authority and discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"So there's no need for us to discuss it publicly because everything must go through due process," he told reporters after the Kita-Untuk-Kita (K2K) Program here on Saturday.

On Friday, the Umno Supreme Council made the decision to appeal for a pardon for its former President, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

Its Secretary General, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the unanimous decision was made at the supreme council monthly meeting which took place on Friday.

Meanwhile, Anwar said, it is still too early for him to give any comment since no paper or process has been initiated so far for the application except for the decision made at the party (Umno) level.

"Those who are convicted have the right to appeal. I do not want to hinder anyone in the matter.

"But all court processes must be followed and respected. The final decision is entirely up to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he said.
