SHAH ALAM - Press secretaries to several ministers have raised concerns over delayed salary payments, which have left them in a state of uncertainty since the unity government took office.

According to a report by Free Malaysia Today (FMT), the delayed payments have left some press secretaries struggling financially.

Anonymous sources told the portal that the situation has become increasingly difficult, and there is a possibility that they may have to resign.

One press secretary mentioned the dilemma of wanting to support their minister while being tempted by higher-paying corporate job offers.

Another press secretary, who has been working for six months, expressed frustration, stating that their fellow aides have not received any payment this year.

"I only receive allowances for travel. Otherwise, I am relying on my savings, which will only last until the end of the year.

"I enjoy working in the ministry, but I don't think I can continue beyond December without any pay," the aide said.

According to the aide, press secretaries were informed that the delay in salary payment was due to the prime minister's pending signature on their appointment letters.

Ministry officials have assured them that efforts are being made to resolve the matter and have provided supporting documents to prove their commitment.

"I have no idea why there is a delay. I don't even know the amount I will be paid," the aide added, noting that even the minister is unsure about the payment details.

Another press secretary revealed that despite reaching out to the Public Services Department, they have yet to receive a response regarding the issue.

The portal has sought comments from the Prime Minister's Office and the Public Services Department regarding the matter.

Sources suggest that the problem of delayed payments extends beyond press secretaries, affecting other officers in some ministries as well.

Meanwhile, another press secretary mentioned that they have only received travel allowances and have not been paid their salaries and special allowances since last year.

This issue of government officials not receiving their salaries was previously highlighted in 2018 when former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad acknowledged that some officials had gone without pay for four months.
