KEPALA BATAS: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says that replacing the quota system with a whole meritocracy approach will only cause injustice to most Malaysians, especially the Bumiputera.

When answering a question during the ‘Temu Anwar’ session at the Penang Matriculation College today, the premier said the quota system did not deny opportunities to other races because appeals could still be made if they were qualified.

"Why must we abolish the quota system? It will cause turmoil in this country. If there are Indian or Chinese children who feel they are not treated fairly (because of the Bumiputera quota system), they can appeal, and we will do our best to give consideration.

"... you talk about meritocracy, but you also need to know that there are impoverished schools... where poor people study. You don't understand that some people don't have enough to eat (and they still) want to go to school... but you want them to compete (through meritocracy).

"I came from MCKK (Kuala Kangsar Malay College); I have nothing to complain about because it's one of the best schools. But as Prime Minister, I don't just want to protect MCKK; I need to protect everyone.

"KPM (Education Ministry), please help everyone. That's why now there has been a change," he said.

During the session, a student expressed dissatisfaction with the quota system, claiming that despite their family excelling in their studies, they could not secure a place in public education institutions even during the second intake.

The student claimed that some less qualified students could be readily accepted in an institution simply because they are Bumiputera.

Anwar added that he could take a popular decision now to satisfy some parties, but it would have a negative impact in the future.

"We must implement (change) in stages... we can't do it in haste. Indian or Chinese, they are all my children. If you force us to change now to satisfy the demand of the extremist, we will be wiped out in the election. And you will have Pas and Bersatu to govern this country," he added.

The Pakatan Harapan Chairman said those who question the quota system should also learn about Malaysian history and understand why ensuring justice for the Bumiputera without marginalising other races was essential.

Anwar said his Cabinet were committed to finding the most effective approach for reforming the country's education system to ensure fairness for all stakeholders. - AWANI
