SHAH ALAM - Any movement aiming to overthrow the current government could be perceived as prioritising power over the interests of the people and the nation, says National Professors Council Senior Fellow Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir.

He made these comments in response to recent rumors, particularly surrounding the "Dubai Move," suggesting it is aimed at toppling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's position.

This political development has created uncertainty and stirred the political landscape.

Jeniri stressed the importance of politicians playing a responsible role to avoid confusion and chaos among the public.

“Such movements may lead to political instability, economic uncertainty, and long-term impacts on the country's establishment and development.

“The political landscape has changed since 2013, as people have become more informed and less blindly obedient to politics.

“Politicians must take responsibility for their actions, especially when making changes that may mislead the public,” Jeniri told Sinar Daily when contacted.

He stressed the importance of politicians refraining from causing unnecessary ‘political obsessions’ in today's era.

"People are becoming more politically literate and knowledgeable due to social media and various accessible sources for research," he said.

Addressing the speculation of Anwar being ousted this week, Jeniri dismissed it as lacking merit.

He highlighted the substantial majority support for Anwar, particularly from Sabah and Sarawak, and stressed the significance of elections in preserving democracy.

"This government has only been in power for a while.

“Give a chance to the Prime Minister and the Unity Government to rule the government.

“What is the guarantee of the new government if they take over?

"Will all the issues come to an end? Will it solve all the problems?

"Can the cost-of-living issue be resolved? Economy? Inflation? Oil price?” he added.

The speculation surrounding Anwar's potential ousting, just weeks after celebrating the one-year milestone of his Madani Government, has left the public confused about the unfolding events in upper management.

Previously, speculation arose about the so-called “Dubai Move” in reference to alleged discussions in the United Arab Emirates between opposition leaders and certain government representatives to topple the Anwar administration.

The alleged meeting, which Anwar and other government leaders have played down, supposedly aimed to divide tasks among “agents” to identify MPs who would defect to the opposition.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Nor claimed that Perikatan Nasional had acquired enough statutory declarations (SDs) to overthrow the unity government.

However, he did not provide details, including the exact number of SDs obtained, especially from government MPs.

To this, Anwar said there is no need to comment on Sanusi’s claim, adding that he would only comment “if there is a bigger issue”.
