KUALA LUMPUR – Muslims are advised to exercise caution when participating in any physical activities with religious elements that contradict Islamic law.

The Federal Territories Mufti Office in its Irsyad Hukum Series No 871, addressed the question of whether it is permissible for Muslims to practice pilates, noting its similarities to yoga.

In a Facebook posting, the office stated that pilates is permissible as long as it is conducted in a private setting and does not involve mixing between men and women.

"Muslims must avoid exercises containing religious elements, such as yoga.

"Muslims are also advised to be cautious of any form of exercise that incorporates rituals or chants contrary to Islamic law," it wrote.

Previously, Malaysian Yoga Sports Association president Professor Dr Lingham Pillai reminded Muslims not to practice yoga as it originated from Hindu religious rituals.

This matter was shared via the social media account of independent preacher Firdaus Wong on Nov 22, following a meeting with Lingham at his office in Setapak.
