KAJANG – An Israeli man made a critical mistake when he instructed a staff member at a hotel on Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, to dispose of a trash bag containing an iPad and a gun storage case on March 26 last year.

This action led to his crime of firearm possession being uncovered by authorities, ultimately resulting in a seven-year prison sentence handed down by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Wednesday.

According to the case facts read by the court interpreter at the Kajang Prison Complex Court, Avitan, 39, admitted to handing over a white plastic garbage bag to the staff member at the hotel lobby at 6pm.

After inspecting the contents of the bag, the staff member, along with the hotel’s security supervisor—who later became the complainant in the case—discovered an iPad, two gun storage cases, several pairs of gloves and socks.

Fearing for their safety and that of the hotel, the complainant proceeded to file a police report.

When police arrived at the hotel, they found that the plastic bag contained a gun storage case labelled "Glock," another labeled "Kuzey," an iPad, 13 rubber gloves, 16 socks, a backpack, a Plephone Prepaid Talk&Co card, a receipt and four packs of wet tissues.

Two K9 unit dogs were deployed to the hotel to detect any traces of explosives.

During the inspection, police found a black suitcase inside a hotel room, but they were unable to conduct an immediate search.

The father of three was subsequently taken to the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) for questioning but was temporarily released after an initial investigation.

On March 28, the investigating officer received instructions to conduct a thorough inspection of the hotel room in question.

However, the accused appeared nervous and struggled while pleading with the authorities not to touch his personal belongings.

At the police station, he refused to open the suitcase despite being ordered to do so.

When officers eventually opened the bag, they discovered a firearm wrapped in a sock, along with four boxes labelled "Shell Shock Nas3" and "Bullet Master," containing bullets.

On Wednesday, the man, whose registered address is in Bnei Brak, Israel, was sentenced to the maximum seven-year prison term on two charges of possessing 200 rounds of ammunition and six firearms last year.

Avitan, 39, received the sentence after changing his plea to guilty during a case mention hearing before Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court Judge Mohd Zaki Mohd Salleh, who presided over the session at the Kajang Prison Complex Court.
