Child’s fatal fall a tragic reminder to prioritise safety – Nancy
Emphasising that the safety of children must be a shared responsibility, Nancy said corridors and other shared spaces should be free of hazardous items such as abandoned furniture.

SHAH ALAM – Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri has called for greater vigilance over the safety of common areas in residential buildings, following the tragic death of a two-year-old boy in Putrajaya.
On May 17, aboy, aged two years and eight months, died after he is believed to have fallen from the seventh floor of his unit in the public housing at Precinct 9 in Putrajaya.
Following the boy's death, allegations surfaced that he had climbed a sofa placed next to the guardrail along the common pathway at the apartment before falling.
Emphasising that the safety of children must be a shared responsibility, Nancy said corridors and other shared spaces should be free of hazardous items such as abandoned furniture.
"I urge all parents to always supervise their children and for residents and building managers to ensure that corridors and common areas are kept clear of dangerous objects like discarded furniture," she told Sinar Daily.
While her ministry does not have direct oversight of building safety, Nancy said it works closely with relevant agencies to advocate for child-friendly environments.
“We don’t directly regulate building safety, but we collaborate with other agencies to promote safer, child-focused spaces,” she said.
Expressing her condolences to the victim's family, Nancy described the tragedy as a heartbreaking reminder of the risks children face in unsafe environments.
“I am deeply saddened by the death of the two-year-old in Precinct 9. My heartfelt condolences to the family—no parent should ever have to endure such a painful loss,” she said.
She added that her ministry would continue raising awareness among parents and communities to prevent such preventable tragedies.
“This incident reminds us how crucial it is to maintain safe homes and shared spaces for young children. Let us all do our part to keep children safe, at home, in the community and everywhere in between,” she said.
Police investigation into the case is underway.
