TRUE leadership isn’t just about commanding from a distance; it’s about being present, visible, and leading by example, even at 15,000 feet in the air.

This Merdeka, that principle came to life as Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) chief General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris, became the first person in his position to personally lead a fighter jet formation during the National Day celebrations held on Aug 31.

Piloting the formidable Su-30MKM fighter jet, he led an impressive formation of 30 air assets from various government agencies, including the Armed Forces, police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

Appointed in June as the 21st RMAF Chief, Norazlan’s decision to take to the skies was more than symbolic, it was intentional.

According to Bernama, Norazlan said that taking to the skies with his men was a deliberate act of leadership, one meant to narrow the gap between commander and crew and to reinforce mutual trust and unity.

"I believe my participation will boost the morale and confidence of RMAF personnel, showing them that I am not merely observing from the main stage but standing side by side with them, giving my energy and effort for the country," he told Bernama.

On Sunday, as the roar of jet engines filled the skies over Putrajaya, a wave of cheers erupted from the tens of thousands gathered below.

Cameras and phones were lifted toward the sky, capturing a moment of national pride and military precision. It was a breathtaking display that celebrated not only technological prowess but also the deep-rooted spirit of service and sacrifice that defines the RMAF.

Norazlan is no stranger to such missions.

With decades of experience piloting various combat aircraft, including the Aermacchi MB339A, A-4PTM Skyhawk and the MiG-29N/UB, he has long been at the core of Malaysia’s air defence operations.

His involvement in cross-country missions and high-level formations dates back to his early days as an operational pilot.

But for him, this Merdeka flight was unlike any other.

"This performance is not just an ordinary display; it carries an important message, especially for the RMAF,” he added.

He also expressed hope that his participation would serve as a reminder that leadership goes beyond giving orders, it involves setting an example and being a role model for those under one’s command.

Norazlan also intended the display to reassure the public that personnel at every level of the military are fully capable of fulfilling their duties with professionalism and dedication.

He added that he was deeply honoured to have received the blessing of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, for his participation in the historic flypast.

Hailing from Kota Tinggi, Johor, Norazlan also expressed gratitude for the flawless execution of the performance, crediting the entire RMAF team, from pilots to ground crew for their dedication and professionalism in making the Merdeka air display a success.
