KOTA KINABALU – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that an additional public holiday will be granted in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, regardless of whether the celebration falls on a Friday or Saturday.

He said the additional holiday will be given on Monday if Hari Raya Aidilfitri falls on a Friday, while if the celebration falls on a Saturday, the extra holiday will be observed on Friday.

“Raya is approaching. When I arrived earlier, people were already asking about the holiday – when PMX would announce it.

“In our tradition, we know that Hari Raya will eventually fall either on a Friday or Saturday. Usually we wait and announce it on Friday night after confirming whether it will be on Friday or Saturday.

“But don’t worry because we are giving an additional Hari Raya holiday. We are granting it because we believe everyone has worked hard.

“During Ramadan, everyone puts in extra time, extra dedication and extra effort. So we will reward you with an additional holiday. For those who haven’t put in the extra effort, you still have a few days left, please do more to deserve the holidays,” he said in a light-hearted remark.

He was speaking during the Hari Pengguna Kebangsaan 2026 celebration held here on Sunday.

Anwar said if Hari Raya falls on Friday, March 20, the additional public holiday will be on Monday, March 23. If the celebration falls on Saturday, March 21, the extra holiday will instead be given on Friday, March 20.

He added that the announcement was made earlier to allow the public to plan their celebrations in advance.

“We are announcing it early so that everyone can plan. Do you want a holiday on Friday or Monday? Those who want a Monday holiday, pray that Hari Raya falls on Saturday,” he joked.
