KUANTAN - Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail has urged the Taiping Zoo & Night Safari to take immediate action to bring back three Malaysian elephants - Dara, Amoi, and Kelat (Dak) - currently housed at Tennoji Zoo in Osaka, Japan.

Wan Rosdy said that the three elephants should be returned to Malaysia and placed at the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre in Temerloh, which he described as more suitable for the animals' natural habitat and needs.

He noted that the conservation centre possesses the expertise and a more conducive environment for elephant preservation and care, particularly regarding social interaction, freedom of movement, and psychological well-being.

"We have a responsibility to ensure that every national treasure is properly preserved, and in this case, the most appropriate place for them is back on their home soil," he said in a statement today.

In the meantime, he emphasised that the issue involving these three mammals should not be taken lightly, as they are part of the country's biodiversity heritage that deserves the best possible protection.

"Based on the calls from the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, as well as various parties including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Malaysian public regarding the condition of the mammals there, I am of the view that this matter cannot be overlooked," he said.

Earlier, Arthur was reported as saying that the suggestions from various parties, including NGOs, to bring home the three national elephants named Dara, Amoi, and Kelat should be given serious consideration. - BERNAMA
