KUALA LUMPUR - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for all government-related official events to be conducted on a moderate scale, Madani Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said.

Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, said the matter was raised during the Cabinet meeting today following discussions at the National Economic Action Council meeting yesterday.

"The prime minister stressed that all official events, workshops and large-scale activities organised by ministries, agencies, statutory bodies, government-linked investment companies and government-linked companies should be held in moderation,” he told reporters during a post-Cabinet meeting briefing and on the global supply crisis here.

Fahmi said each ministry has been informed by the Finance Ministry on the alignment of operating expenditure to ensure programmes and activities are in line with the government’s priorities.

"Amid the challenges Malaysia is facing due to the global supply crisis, guidelines have been issued and further details will be provided by ministry secretaries-general in coordination with the Chief Secretary to the Government and the Treasury secretary-general,” he said.

Fahmi said the prime minister also wants the Madani Adopted Village Programme under the Federal Government to be better coordinated, particularly with members of parliament.

He said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, proposed that activities at rural community centres under the ministry be aligned with the National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi) managed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

On the issue of social media use among teenagers, Fahmi said the Communications Ministry plans to introduce an electronic know-your-customer (e-KYC) system to verify users’ identities and ages.

The initiative aims to ensure that children under 16 do not independently own social media accounts, but instead have accounts created and monitored by their parents, he added.

"The main issue is ensuring proper parental control. We want to prevent young children from interacting with unknown adults,” he said.

Yesterday, Anwar said the proposal to introduce an age limit for social media use among teenagers must be studied comprehensively with the involvement of all stakeholders.

He said this is important to ensure better regulation and to protect young users from negative influences in the digital space. - BERNAMA
