Few individuals have left as terrifying an impact on public consciousness as serial killers. They have also inspired iconic horror characters and numerous dramatic adaptations on television and the big screen. The true facts behind their brutal crimes are sometimes difficult to prove and some cases remain unsolved to this day. Here are 10 of the most notorious serial killers in history.

1. Jack the Ripper

In 1888, the Whitechapel district in London was shaken by an unidentified man known as Jack the Ripper, who lured prostitutes into dark alleys before slaughtering and mutilating them. Without modern forensic technology, Victorian-era police failed to identify the perpetrator. He vanished after the final murder, and the case was closed in 1892, remaining a mystery to this day.

2. H. H. Holmes

Originally an insurance scammer, Holmes later built a ‘murder castle’ in Chicago during the 1893 World’s Fair. The building was filled with secret rooms, hidden passages and deadly traps. He lured mostly young women there before killing them using poisonous gas or conducting cruel experiments. Their bodies were disposed of in furnaces or sold to medical schools. He was eventually caught and hanged in 1896 after confessing to at least 27 murders.

3. Belle Gunness (Lady Bluebeard)

Nicknamed Lady Bluebeard, she immigrated from Norway to America in 1881. After several suspicious deaths, including her husband’s, she moved to a farm in Indiana. Gunness then sought new husbands through advertisements, but many of the men disappeared without a trace. In 1908, her farm burned down and several bodies, including children, were discovered. Her true fate remains unknown, with unconfirmed sightings reported years after her supposed death.

4. Ed Gein (The Butcher of Plainfield)

Raised in isolation in Wisconsin under a domineering mother, Gein lived alone on a farm after his family’s death. In 1957, police discovered a headless body in his home and various items made from human body parts. He was also accused of grave robbing. Declared legally insane, he was confined to a mental institution until his death from cancer complications in 1984.

5. Ted Bundy (The Campus Killer)

A handsome and well-educated man who shocked the world with a series of murders targeting young women in the 1970s. He escaped custody multiple times before being captured. His case drew massive media attention, especially after the murder of a 12-year-old victim. He was executed in the electric chair in 1989. The total number of his victims remains unknown.

6. John Wayne Gacy (The Killer Clown)

Known for entertaining children as a clown, Gacy led a double life as a murderer of teenage boys. In 1978, police discovered 29 bodies buried beneath his house. He was convicted of 33 murders and executed by lethal injection in 1994.

7. Harold Shipman (Dr Death)

A British doctor who murdered his own patients, mostly elderly women. He is believed to have killed over 200 people by administering lethal doses of medication since 1972. He was caught after irregularities were found in death certificates. In 2000, he received a life sentence without parole but died by suicide in prison four years later.

8. Aileen Wuornos (The Damsel of Death)

Having endured a troubled childhood, Wuornos became a sex worker and turned to crime. She killed at least seven men in Florida, claiming self-defense. Arrested in 1991, she confessed during a phone call with an accomplice. She was executed by lethal injection in 2002.

9. Dennis Rader (The BTK Killer)

A seemingly ordinary man active in his community, Rader secretly led a double life. He murdered at least 10 people, including children, between 1974 and 1991. He was arrested in 2005 after sending clues to police. He pleaded guilty and is serving a life sentence.

10. Jeffrey Dahmer (The Milwaukee Monster)

Dahmer committed his first murder at 18 and killed 17 men between 1978 and 1991. He was arrested after one victim managed to escape and alert authorities. A search of his apartment uncovered disturbing evidence, including photos of dismembered bodies and acid containers used to dispose of remains. During his trial, he shocked the public by admitting to cannibalism. He was sentenced to 957 years in prison before being killed by a fellow inmate in 1994.
