Scammer impersonates TMJ for money on Instagram

JOHOR BAHRU - The police are investigating the action of an irresponsible party who has impersonated the Tunku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ) on Instagram.

According to Johor Police, Deputy Commissioner M Kumar, Tunku Ismail's name was used to request for money from unsuspecting individuals.

He said the Johor palace media office had detected a screen capture of a direct message that was sent by the fake account, and had made a police report at 2.35pm on Tuesday.

"The screenshot shows a message from the suspect claiming to be Tunku Ismail.

"The message was sent to several parties to request a certain amount of payment for business matters," he said in a statement.

Results of preliminary investigations into matter found that the suspect disguised himself as Tunku Ismail by modifying the screen capture used to communicate with the victim.

"The suspect used the profile picture on Tunku Ismail's Instagram account so that the victim believed they were communicating with Tunku Ismail.

"So far, the message has been distributed to eight companies and some have been deceived and put a sum of money into the account as instructed by the suspect ," he said.

The case is currently being investigated according to Section 419 and 420 of the Penal Code.

"The public is also advised not to believe easily anything on social media easily and to first check information on social media before conducting business of any kind ," he advised.
