CHERAS - Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Perimbun polling centre in Cheras saw a low voters turnout as of 1pm today.

An Election Commission (EC) officer, who declined to be named, said there was only a small number of people who have come out to vote since 8am.

“We were expecting for a huge turnout, equipping ourselves with enough manpower to handle voters, however we have only had only up to 50 people at any given time.

“Nevertheless the voting process here have been running smooth without any glitches as hoped,” According to figures provided by EC, Selangor saw 28 per cent of voters turnout as of 12pm.

Votes from this centre will be for the Balakong state seat.

Nineteen year old Form Six student M. Sri Meena from Cheras said she made it a point with her family to come out and vote.

“For us as a family, we see voting as our right and responsibility to the country.

“Our choice of leaders will determine the future of the country,” she said.

“I came all the way from Semenyih here with my parents to cast my vote,” Soon said the voting process was smooth and the EC officers were helpful in aiding her old parents.

Samsiah Salahuddin, 59, from Taman Kota Cheras here said she had informed her children two weeks ago to make themselves available for voting today.

“I called up all my kids who are now staying in other parts of the country to come back and vote.

“It may be just one vote but it will decide the sort of futur our children and grandchildren will have,” she added.

Samsiah, who had come to the polling centre at 11.30am, praised the the EC officers on duty for the swift and smooth polling process.

Balakong Perikatan Nasional candidate Steven Lai Choon Wen is up against Pakatan Harapan’s Wayne Ong Chun Wei (DAP) in a straight fight for the Balakong state seat.

Voters in Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan will be casting their voters today for the 245 state seats in these six states.

The Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election is also being held simultaneously.
