YAN - In a stunning electoral victory, Perikatan Nasional (PN) has delivered a resounding blow to its political adversaries in Kedah, capturing 33 out of 36 state seats that were up for grabs.

Essentially, this meant that the coalition has more than two-thirds majority in the soon-to-formed Kedah State Legislative Assembly.

The two seats that one of its contenders — Pakatan Harapan (PH) — manage to win were the Kota Darul Aman seat won DAP’s Teh See Leong, the Bakar Arang seat won by PKR’s Adam Loh and the Sidam seat won by PKR’s Bau Wong.

PH had contested in 21 seats.

PN’s other contender, Barisan Nasional (BN) however won zilch — in all 15 seats that it contested —, a loss that attested its diminishing clout in the northern which it used to rule uninterruptedly save for the 2008 and 2018 polls.

The result — which effectively meant that PN had managed to defend its grip on Kedah —was officially announced on the Election Commission (EC) website at 12:28AM today.

Here in Kedah, PN was captained by Pas’ Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor whereas the PH-BN alliance was co-led by Datuk Mahfuz Omar of Amanah and Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid from Umno.

Both Mahfuz and Mahdzir who contested in, respectively, Alor Mengkudu and Pedu seats, lost by a majority of 10,104 and 6,373, each.

Yesterday, a total of 1,585,085 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in an electoral contest involving 83 candidates vying for Kedah’s 36 state.

Kedah along with Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan held their respective elections today due to not doing it in tandem with the November 2022’s 15th General Elections.

While PN won Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, the coalition however, lost Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan to PH-BN.
