KOTA KINABALU - The Sabah Progressive Party's (SAPP) quip that parties from the Peninsula do not need to contest in Sabah has raised questions about the party’s own status which is perceived to be in a state of 'dual allegiance'.

MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee's statement was a slander against MCA as a party from the Peninsula.

"But if you look down on parties from the Peninsula, why are you in a state of dual allegiance?.

"Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) here seems to be based on Sabah's criteria, at the same time you are also part of Perikatan Nasional (PN),” he said in a press conference after officiating the Sabah MCA Annual General Meeting, today.

He said this in response to Yong’s statement saying that parties in the Peninsula should not contest in the upcoming Sabah election.

Wee also defended his party although it was based in the Peninsula, but Sabah MCA would still be given the autonomy.

"In this regard, we give Sabah MCA autonomy. So there is no problem.

“The leaders did not say that Wee Ka Siong will be the chairman of Sabah, the position will still be from Sabah, in accordance to Perjanjian Malaysia 1963 (MA63).
