KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia plans to continue pursuing an independent, principled foreign policy.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, in his speech at the 10th International Islam and Liberty Conference (ILN), acknowledged the rise of populism globally that has threatened the foundations of a liberal democracy.

“The rise of populism in various parts of the world has pushed political debate into extreme positions, where hyper-nationalism has come to dominate the discourse and challenge liberal politics,” he said.

He believed the rise in populism erodes the foundations of economic stability in the long run.

Zambry stated Malaysia’s foreign policy has centred around protecting the nation’s sovereignty and interests.

“The overarching thrust of its foreign policy has been to safeguard Malaysia’s sovereignty and national interests as well as to contribute meaningfully towards a just and equitable community of nations through effective diplomacy,” he said.

Since Malaysia is a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Zambry added that the country valued the unity of the Muslim community, even though it has a diverse population with people of different religions, such as Muslims, Christians, Hindus, and others, living together in harmony.

The ILN conference, commencing today and would run until tomorrow, aimed to provide an in-depth exploration of various facets, including religion, politics, economics, peace, and prosperity, within countries with Muslim-majority populations.
